In a thrilling United Athletic Conference showdown, Abilene Christian University (ACU) secured their first conference championship and FCS playoff berth with a dramatic 35-31 victory over Tarleton State. Maverick McIvor, the Wildcats' sixth-year senior quarterback, delivered an unforgettable performance, throwing for 391 yards and four touchdowns, including the game-winner to Sam Hicks with just 19 seconds remaining.
Trailing 31-28 with 1:48 left, ACU’s season came down to one pivotal drive. With no timeouts, McIvor led the Wildcats on a 75-yard march in just 12 plays, completing 9-of-9 passes during the stretch. A 24-yard strike to J.J. Henry brought the Wildcats to the 1-yard line, setting up McIvor's touchdown toss to Hicks in the left flat. The crowd erupted as ACU claimed the lead, showcasing their clutch DNA.
The game wasn’t over yet. Tarleton State, known for their explosive offense, had one last shot. Quarterback Victor Gabalis connected on a few quick passes, advancing to the ACU 39-yard line. But on the final play, ACU defensive back Izaiah Kelley batted down a desperation throw into the end zone, sparking jubilation among players and fans alike.
Beyond McIvor’s standout performance, running back Sam Hicks played a critical role, amassing 137 rushing yards, a touchdown, and seven receptions for 38 yards. Receiver Blayne Taylor also dazzled, racking up 168 yards on 10 catches.
For Tarleton State, ranked No. 12 in the FCS coaches poll, Gabalis impressed with 304 passing yards and three touchdowns, two of which went to standout receiver Darius Cooper, who totaled 140 receiving yards. Running back Kayvon Britten chipped in with 101 rushing yards, while Braelon Bridges added 73 yards and a touchdown.
This victory not only earned ACU their first NCAA Division I conference championship since joining the ranks in 2013 but also validated years of growth under head coach Keith Patterson. The Wildcats’ 8-3 record (7-1 UAC) reflects their resilience throughout a challenging season, with this win cementing their place among the elite in the FCS.
The Wildcats close the regular season against Stephen F. Austin next Saturday, a non-conference game. A win would bolster their resume, potentially earning them a home playoff game. The official playoff brackets will be announced on Sunday, Nov. 24.
For now, ACU revels in their hard-fought triumph. This game not only highlighted their talent but also their determination to make history. With the playoffs on the horizon, the Wildcats have proven they’re ready for the next challenge.
