In a surprising turn of events, former NFL head coach Jack Del Rio has stepped down from his role as Special Advisor to the Head Coach at the University of Wisconsin. The decision comes just days after Del Rio’s arrest for driving while intoxicated, a charge that has cast a shadow over his recent transition from professional to collegiate football.
Del Rio, a seasoned NFL coach known for his tenures with the Jacksonville Jaguars (2003–2011) and the Oakland Raiders (2015–2017), joined Wisconsin's coaching staff under Luke Fickell to lend his extensive experience to the program. His NFL career also includes his time as a linebacker, making him a respected figure in football circles. However, his arrest last Friday has derailed this chapter of his career.
According to Madison police reports, Del Rio was involved in an incident early Friday morning when the car he was driving hit a street sign and broke through a fence. Authorities noted that he "showed signs of impairment" at the scene. Thankfully, no injuries were reported. ESPN’s Adam Rittenberg broke the story, and the news has since reverberated through the sports world.
By Monday afternoon, Del Rio had resigned from his post. Head Coach Luke Fickell addressed the situation, saying, “It’s a tough situation, decisions that all of us have to be able to take full responsibility for. So that’s what Jack will do and we’ll continue to move forward.”
For Wisconsin, the timing of Del Rio’s departure couldn’t come at a more critical juncture. The Badgers, currently sitting at 5-4 on the season, are reeling from consecutive losses to Penn State and Iowa. With a pivotal matchup against top-ranked Oregon looming this Saturday night at Camp Randall Stadium, the program must refocus amidst the off-field turmoil. Kickoff is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. ET, with the game set to air on NBC.
While Del Rio’s resignation marks a disappointing chapter for the veteran coach, it also serves as a stark reminder of the weight of personal accountability in high-profile roles. As Wisconsin braces for its next challenge, the focus shifts back to the field, where the Badgers hope to rewrite their season narrative under the bright lights against the Ducks.
