In a move that highlights both legacy and leadership, the Ohio State women’s basketball program announced two exciting additions to its staff on Monday. Head coach Kevin McGuff welcomed Katie Smith, a Hall of Fame player and celebrated coach, as an assistant coach, and former Buckeye star Jacy Sheldon as the director of player development.
These hires bring a powerful blend of experience, passion, and deep ties to the program, signaling a promising chapter for the Buckeyes as they aim to solidify their place among the elite in women’s college basketball.
Katie Smith, a name synonymous with excellence in women’s basketball, brings an illustrious résumé to the Ohio State bench. After 11 seasons coaching in the WNBA, including a recent stint as associate head coach for the Minnesota Lynx, Smith is returning to her alma mater where her career began. Smith’s accolades as a player are unmatched. A three-time Olympic gold medalist, seven-time WNBA All-Star, and two-time WNBA Champion, Smith has left an indelible mark on basketball history. She is a member of the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame, Women’s Basketball Hall of Fame, and Ohio State Athletics Hall of Fame.
Reflecting on her return to Columbus, Smith shared her excitement:
"Ohio State played such a pivotal role in my journey, and I’m honored to give back to the program that shaped me. I’m ready to work with Coach McGuff and our talented players to build on the Buckeyes’ proud legacy."
As a Buckeye, Smith led the program to its first NCAA Championship game appearance and set a standard of excellence with her record-breaking scoring and leadership on and off the court.
Jacy Sheldon, fresh off her rookie season with the Dallas Wings, is also making her way back to Columbus. A standout during her collegiate career, Sheldon is stepping into a new role as the director of player development. Sheldon’s responsibilities include creating personalized development plans for players, fostering leadership, and preparing student-athletes for success beyond basketball. Her familiarity with the program and understanding of the demands on and off the court make her uniquely suited to guide the next generation of Buckeyes.
"Ohio State gave me so much as a player and a person," Sheldon said. "I’m excited to contribute to the program that has meant so much to me, and I can’t wait to support these young women as they chase their dreams."
During her time as a Buckeye, Sheldon was instrumental in leading the team to its first Elite Eight in 30 years and a Big Ten regular season title. Her name is etched in Ohio State history, finishing in the top-15 in 10 career categories, including sixth in scoring with over 2,000 points.

For Coach McGuff, the addition of Smith and Sheldon to the staff represents more than just strategic hires—it’s a homecoming that brings immense value to the team’s culture and aspirations.
"As former Buckeyes, Katie and Jacy bring a passion for this program that will inspire our players and help us compete at the highest level," McGuff said.
With the season set to tip off, Buckeye Nation has every reason to be excited. Ohio State will open at home against Charlotte on Tuesday in the Our Honor Defend game. Fans are encouraged to pack Value City Arena as the Buckeyes aim to continue making the Schottenstein Center one of the most electric venues in women’s college basketball.
With Smith’s championship pedigree and Sheldon’s modern perspective, the future of Ohio State women’s basketball looks brighter than ever. Go Bucks!
