The Seattle Sounders returned to Lumen Field to take on another Eastern Conference foe, the New England Revolution, on July 6, 2024. Entering the game on the back of a four-game unbeaten run, the Sounders were bolstered by the return of Ruidiaz and Nouhou, both of whom were suspended for last week's thrilling 2-1 win against Chicago.
The Sounders have shown a marked improvement in recent games and seem to have put their early-season struggles behind them. Ruidiaz returned to the squad, while Nouhou slotted straight into the starting lineup at left-back, adding much-needed stability to a previously shaky defense. The Revolution paraded a young side, with attacking midfielder Esmir Bajraktarevic showing bright spots throughout the game.
Seattle looked the most promising early on, taking the lead in the 15th minute. A smart give-and-go between Jordan Morris and Albert Rusnak saw Morris use his acceleration and strength to break through the Revolution’s defense before slotting the ball home for the opener.
New England struggled to create significant chances, and when they did, they found Sounders’ goalkeeper Stefan Frei in excellent form. Frei made four brilliant saves to keep the shutout, including a close-range double save to deny the Revolution in the first half.
The Sounders continued to dominate possession and applied high pressure to win the ball back quickly. The second goal came in the 81st minute. A headed interception by Vargas in the middle of the field fell to Rusnak, who struck from the edge of the box, finding the keeper's bottom right corner to seal the points for Seattle.
The best player for the Sounders this season, Rusnak’s return from injury has been pivotal. He has either scored or assisted in the last five games. His composure on the ball and ability to facilitate play alongside Joao Paulo in midfield have been crucial for Coach Schmetzer’s team. Frei’s crucial and timely saves kept the Revolution at bay and moved him closer to the MLS record for shutouts.
The Sounders' victory over the New England Revolution sees them move to 6th in the Western Conference standings. With key players returning and the team finding their rhythm, Seattle looks poised to continue their climb up the table. Meanwhile, inconsistency continues to plague the Revolution, who need to find stability if they are to challenge for higher positions.
