In a pivotal road matchup against UCF, No. 11 BYU continued its undefeated streak, prevailing 37-24 in a game where the Cougars’ control over the clock and a balanced offense proved decisive. With this victory, BYU now sits at 8-0 and remains a contender for the College Football Playoff, demonstrating resilience and tactical precision throughout the contest.
Quarterback Jake Retzlaff led BYU with 228 passing yards and two touchdowns, adding another score on the ground. Retzlaff’s command over the offense, particularly in critical moments, fueled BYU's early lead, including a 62-yard touchdown pass to Chase Roberts just before halftime. Retzlaff emphasized the value of preparation in post-game remarks, noting how this meticulous approach allowed the team to execute under pressure.
The Cougars leaned on a balanced offensive approach, as running backs LJ Martin and Hinckley Ropati combined for 184 rushing yards and a touchdown. This dominant ground game helped BYU control possession, with the Cougars holding the ball for nearly 40 minutes, a significant advantage over UCF's typically fast-paced style.
Despite a strong effort from running back RJ Harvey, who rushed for 127 yards and two touchdowns, UCF couldn’t overcome an early deficit. Quarterback Jacurri Brown struggled, completing just 96 passing yards with two interceptions before being replaced by freshman Dylan Rizk in the fourth quarter. The Knights’ offense was hampered further by the loss of top receiver Kobe Hudson, who exited early in the game with a leg injury.
BYU’s defense stood firm, forcing two crucial turnovers and limiting UCF’s offensive production. In a standout special teams play, BYU successfully executed a trick field goal attempt, with holder Sam Vander Haar tossing the ball between his legs to kicker Will Ferrin for a first down. This play, along with Ferrin’s three field goals, kept BYU’s momentum going strong.
With their season at 8-0, BYU now heads into a bye week before a much-anticipated rivalry matchup with Utah. For UCF, the focus shifts to recovering from its fifth straight loss, with hopes of clinching a bowl game contingent on a strong finish to the season. The Knights’ annual Space Game against Arizona next week could be the first step in turning their season around.
BYU’s continued success has kept them in the national spotlight, and with playoff aspirations in sight, the Cougars are eager to show they’re a top contender.
