In a tense and thrilling opening game of the MLS Cup Playoffs, the Columbus Crew managed to secure a crucial 2-0 victory over Atlanta United. The match, held at Columbus's Lower.com Field, marked the beginning of the best-of-three series in the MLS Eastern Conference playoffs, and it certainly did not disappoint.
Colombian international forward Cucho Hernandez was the star of the evening, delivering a remarkable performance and scoring both of the Crew's goals. His stellar showing allowed the third-seeded Columbus Crew to take a 1-0 series lead over Atlanta United, who are the sixth seed in the new playoff format.
Hernandez, who has been a pivotal player for Columbus throughout the season, continued to shine on Wednesday. With his brace, he increased his goal tally for the year to an impressive 18 in all competitions. His contributions put the Crew in a strong position to advance to the Eastern Conference semi-finals of the MLS postseason.
The first goal of the match occurred in first-half stoppage time when Cucho Hernandez capitalized on a swift counter-attack. He received the ball just inside Atlanta's half, and with lightning speed, he charged towards the goal. Despite the feeble challenge from Atlanta's Ronald Hernandez, the Colombian forward unleashed a ferocious shot that beat goalkeeper Brad Guzan at the near post, finding the roof of the net.
The Columbus Crew's second goal came in the 51st minute after a reckless challenge by Ronald Hernandez inside the box. Romanian winger Alexandru Matan was sent tumbling over, resulting in a penalty for the Crew. Cucho Hernandez confidently stepped up to the spot and calmly converted the penalty, extending Columbus's lead to 2-0.
Hernandez's dynamic performance kept Atlanta United on the back foot for most of the match, and it was evident that the absence of Argentine World Cup-winner Thiago Almada, who was suspended due to a red card received in the final regular season game, had a significant impact on Atlanta's chances.
The good news for Atlanta United fans is that Thiago Almada will be eligible to return for Game 2.
The league MVP candidate has been a standout performer for Atlanta throughout the season, with an impressive record of 19 assists and 11 goals. His presence could prove pivotal in Atlanta's quest to level the series in the upcoming match.
Game 2 of this intense playoff series is set to take place at Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta on Tuesday, where Atlanta United will be determined to bounce back and keep their playoff hopes alive. If they manage to tie the series, a thrilling winner-takes-all Game 3 will be hosted by the Columbus Crew on Sunday, November 12, at 7 p.m.
With the stage set for a dramatic playoff series, soccer fans can eagerly anticipate the showdown in Game 2 and the potential decisive clash in Game 3. Columbus Crew fans will be hoping Cucho Hernandez can continue his incredible form, while Atlanta United fans will look to their returning MVP candidate, Thiago Almada, for a spark of inspiration in their quest for postseason success.
