- De La Vega Returns
In a dramatic 2-1 victory at Lumen Field, the Seattle Sounders overcame early adversity and notable absences to secure a comeback win against the Chicago Fire, thanks to Albert Rusnak's two penalty goals.
Seattle forward Raul Ruidiaz and defender Nouhou were banned from training with the team this week and did not play against the Chicago Fire. Their absence was keenly felt, but the team showed resilience and depth in their performance.
Chicago looked strong in the early stages, dominating possession and creating significant chances. A Stefan Frei save from a Chicago breakaway in the 5th minute highlighted Chicago's intent. Chicago opened the scoring in the 30th minute through Maren Haile-Selassie, who showcased individual brilliance by nutmegging Jackson Ragen and finishing in the bottom corner, silencing the Seattle crowd.
Seattle struggled to create clear-cut chances in the first half, with their best opportunity coming from a right-footed shot by Jordan Morris, which was parried away by Chicago goalkeeper Chris Brady. However, the second half saw a rejuvenated Seattle side, buoyed by the introduction of Paul Rothrock. Rothrock's energy and forward runs were pivotal, as he was involved in every positive move for Seattle. Chicago began to sit deep, trying to defend their lead, but their resistance waned as the half wore on.
Seattle's comeback began with a penalty from Albert Rusnak, following a foul in the penalty area by Chicago's Jonathan Dean. Despite creating several chances, Seattle couldn't find the net again until the 90th minute. A foul on Jordan Morris led to another penalty, and Rusnak calmly buried the kick in the bottom left corner to secure the win.
Pedro De La Vega made his return to action for Seattle, having not played since May 18. His presence added an extra dimension to the team, and his fitness will be crucial for Seattle's ambitions moving forward.
As Seattle looks to turn their season around, keeping De La Vega fit will be essential. The situation with Ruidiaz and Nouhou remains uncertain, and how coach Brian Schmetzer handles their absence will be key to the team's success moving forward.
