Portland Timbers Make MLS History with 4-2 Win Over LA Galaxy
PORTLAND, Ore. – The Portland Timbers delivered an electric 4-2 win against the LA Galaxy at Providence Park on Wednesday night, boosting their playoff hopes while etching their names in MLS history. Leading the charge was Brazilian playmaker Evander, whose two goals and an assist underscored a remarkable performance. He was supported by Jonathan Rodríguez and Felipe Mora, who each netted a goal in what became a landmark night for Portland.
The Timbers now hold a four-point cushion in the Western Conference standings as they continue to push for playoff security with just five matches remaining. Evander's standout play not only propelled Portland to victory but also solidified his case for MLS MVP.
Evander’s contribution was nothing short of monumental, as his two goals and an assist pushed his season tally to 32 goal contributions—tying the Timbers' club record set by Diego Valeri in 2017. His 18 assists this season are also the most by any Portland player in history and tie him for the league lead. With a goal contribution in 10 straight matches, Evander continues to elevate his team as they look to cement a playoff spot.
His chemistry with teammates Santiago Moreno, who provided two assists, and Jonathan Rodríguez was undeniable. This trio has carried Portland’s attack all season, with each player now boasting at least 14 goals—making them the first trio in MLS history to achieve that milestone in a single season.
The night was more than just a victory; it was history in the making. Evander, Mora, and Rodríguez each scored their 14th goals of the season, marking the first time in MLS history that three players from the same team have netted 14 or more goals. Together, they’ve accounted for 70% of Portland’s goals this season, a total of 42 goals combined, which exceeds the goal output of 10 other MLS teams this year.
With this potent offense, Portland’s 60 goals are the most in the Western Conference and second only to Inter Miami CF in the entire league. The Timbers’ attacking trio has been crucial to achieving this, driving Portland’s resurgence as they eye postseason success.
Despite LA Galaxy’s attempts to stay in the game, with goals from Gabriel Pec and Joseph Paintsil, Portland’s offensive dominance was too much to overcome.
Now unbeaten in their last 12 matches at Providence Park, the Timbers are in strong form heading into the final stretch of the regular season. Their next challenge comes in a road match against Real Salt Lake on September 21. With playoff positioning on the line, Portland will be hoping their red-hot form, led by Evander, continues.
As the Timbers chase postseason glory, fans can look forward to seeing more magic from this historic trio. With Evander breaking records and Mora and Rodríguez consistently finding the back of the net, the Timbers’ attack is proving to be one of the most formidable in MLS this season.
