Philadelphia Union’s victory against Mazatlán in the Leagues Cup was a game that fans won’t soon forget. The win not only secured their spot in the tournament’s semifinals for the second consecutive year but also exemplified the spirit of the city they represent—gritty, determined, and unyielding in the face of challenges.
After the match, Head Coach Jim Curtin praised his team’s resilience, highlighting the players' collective determination. “We have guys that have guts,” Curtin said. “Every guy contributes and every guy doesn't want to let the other guy down, which is a powerful thing.”
Philadelphia might not have the biggest names in soccer, but they’ve built a team with smart investments and a focus on developing young talent. Curtin emphasized that on their best day, the Union can compete with any team. This particular match demonstrated that sentiment perfectly.
The Union faced a significant challenge when Tai Baribo received a second yellow card, forcing the team to play the entire second half with just ten men. Despite being a player down, they held Mazatlán to a 1-1 draw, pushing the match into a penalty shootout.
Andre Blake, the Union’s goalkeeper, was the hero of the shootout, making a crucial save to kick off the penalties. José Martinez then scored what might have been his final goal at Subaru Park, followed by another save from Blake. Jesus Bueno, who spent most of the game on the bench, stepped up to deliver the decisive penalty, securing the Union’s victory.
“The group showed heart, character—whatever word you want to use. Guts, passion. We survived and advanced, and we have the best goalkeeper in our league,” Curtin remarked.
Although the match had a slow start, it was Baribo’s red card just before halftime that sparked the team into action. Curtin noted that the setback seemed to wake his team up, leading to Mikael Uhre’s crucial goal in a counter-attack.
The Union’s journey hasn’t been easy this summer. The team dealt with injuries and the absence of key players due to international duties for tournaments like Copa America, UEFA Euros, and the upcoming Paris Olympics. However, with the squad back to full strength, they’ve managed to fight their way to the Leagues Cup semifinals. Next, they’ll face the defending MLS Cup Champions, Columbus Crew, in what promises to be a fierce battle.
“We're going to fight like hell,” Curtin vowed.
“We've been close, as close as you can possibly get, and that's our DNA. I still love my group. I love our fans. I love how they backed us tonight. I love Andre Blake. I love José Martinez. Jesus Bueno steps up in a clutch way. I still think we have more to give, and we're going to make a run at this thing.”
As the Union prepare for the semifinal showdown, they carry with them the hope and determination that have become hallmarks of their journey. Fans can be sure that this team, fueled by grit and passion, will leave everything on the field in their quest for the Leagues Cup title.
