After a demanding stretch of four consecutive road games in July and a deep run in the Leagues Cup, New York City FC returned to their home turf for a Major League Soccer (MLS) showdown against the struggling Chicago Fire. The match, held at Citi Field, saw NYCFC take a commanding 2-0 lead for the majority of the game, thanks to a brilliant first-half performance by Alonso Martínez. However, the home team was unable to hold onto their advantage, ultimately conceding two late goals and settling for a disappointing draw.
The game began with a bang as Martínez, who had scored the fastest goal in the club’s history just a week earlier, opened the scoring in the 16th minute. Assisted by Maxi Moralez, Martínez unleashed a stunning strike from outside the box, marking his first such goal of the season. He continued to dazzle just seven minutes later, netting his second goal of the night after a slick combination play on the right flank, bringing his tally to 10 MLS goals for the season. Martínez's clinical performance highlighted his successful transition from a right-winger to a central striker under Head Coach Nick Cushing.
Despite dominating the first half, NYCFC's performance began to falter after the break. Chicago Fire found a lifeline in the 78th minute when Hugo Cuypers scored with a powerful strike, exposing a lapse in NYCFC's defense. The pressure mounted as Chicago pressed for an equalizer, and their persistence paid off deep into stoppage time. A handball by Tayvon Gray gave Chicago a penalty, which Brian Gutiérrez converted to complete the comeback and secure a 2-2 draw.
This result leaves NYCFC in 5th place in the Eastern Conference, with the team likely reflecting on this match as a missed opportunity to close the gap on the 4th place New York Red Bulls, who also drew in their recent match. Despite the setback, Coach Cushing remained optimistic, emphasizing that such experiences are part of the team's growth and progress.
As the season enters its final stretch, NYCFC will need to regroup quickly. They face a challenging away game against Columbus Crew, a team currently riding high after reaching the Leagues Cup Final. For New York City, the focus will be on regaining their momentum and finishing the season strong.
