North Texas SC advanced to the MLS NEXT Pro Western Conference semifinals on Sunday night after a hard-fought 3-2 victory over Vancouver Whitecaps FC 2. The quarterfinal match, held at Choctaw Stadium in Arlington, Texas, attracted an energetic crowd of 1,693 fans. This win marks a crucial step for North Texas as they improve their playoff record to 1-1-0 in the competition.
The match began with a bang for North Texas, as Herbert Endeley found the back of the net just eight minutes into the game. This opening goal was particularly historic, as it was the team’s first playoff goal since 2022 when Bernard Kamungo scored. Endeley’s goal set the tone for a dynamic first half, with North Texas SC doubling their lead in the 29th minute. Diego García capitalized on a quick counterattack, expertly finishing a cross from Logan Farrington to notch his first playoff goal for the club.
Despite North Texas’ commanding first-half performance, the momentum shifted in the second half when Vancouver responded with two rapid goals in the 65th and 75th minutes, leveling the score. The intensity of the match increased as the clock ticked down, with both sides seeking a decisive goal.
It was substitute Tomas Pondeca who rose to the occasion for North Texas. Entering the game in the 64th minute, Pondeca seized an opportunity in the 85th minute to secure the game-winning goal, calmly dribbling into the penalty box and slotting the ball into the far post. His clutch performance helped the team reclaim the lead and secure their spot in the next round.
Interim head coach Michel Garbini reflected on the performance, noting,
“We did well in the first half, but we got a bit too comfortable in the second. However, our ability to create chances and maintain high energy, especially from the bench, was key to our victory.”
Pondeca’s game-winning goal not only solidified his impact but also emphasized the depth of the team, with ten starters making their playoff debut, including Farrington, García, and Endeley. Even with Vancouver’s second-half surge, the resolve and adaptability of North Texas shone through in a pressure-filled match.
Now, all eyes turn to the next challenge. North Texas SC will select their semifinal opponent during the Selection Show on Tuesday, October 22, 2024, at 2 PM CT. The semifinal clash is scheduled for Saturday, October 26, at 7:30 PM CT at Choctaw Stadium.
This victory not only highlights North Texas SC’s resilience but also marks a step closer to a potential title run, as they continue their journey in the MLS NEXT Pro playoffs.
