In a hard-fought, defensive battle, FC Dallas earned its seventh shutout of the 2024 MLS season with a scoreless draw against the Portland Timbers on Sunday night. The match at Providence Park marked the final away game for FC Dallas this season, bringing their road record to 1-10-6. While it wasn’t the victory the team had hoped for, they showcased resilience and defensive strength.
Goalkeeper Jimmy Maurer was a standout in the match, tying his career high with seven saves, a crucial contribution that helped Dallas secure its third road shutout of the season. Maurer, making only his third start of the year, delivered a commanding performance in what was his 65th MLS career start. His efforts not only tied his personal best but also earned Dallas a much-needed point as the team prepares to wrap up its regular season.
The match also saw the return of defender Marco Farfan to his former stomping grounds. Farfan, a product of the Timbers’ Homegrown program, faced his old team for the first time since his departure in 2020. Midfielder Tsiki Ntsabeleng and forward Logan Farrington also brought Oregon connections to the field, having played their college soccer at Oregon State.
Despite their defensive success, FC Dallas struggled offensively, particularly on the road this season, where they’ve faced significant challenges. Forward Petar Musa, the team’s top scorer in away games, didn’t feature in the match, which left Dallas without a consistent attacking threat. The team will look to regroup ahead of its season finale.
This result brings the all-time series record between the two teams to 11-9-10 in favor of FC Dallas, although their record at Providence Park remains a difficult 1-8-5.
Looking ahead, FC Dallas will close out the 2024 regular season at home against Sporting Kansas City on October 16. The match, which will be part of the club's Family Night event, promises to be an exciting finale to the season. Fans can catch the action on MLS Season Pass via Apple TV or on local radio in both English and Spanish.
This final road test may not have brought the win, but FC Dallas can hold their heads high knowing they secured another shutout and a strong showing from Jimmy Maurer, proving that the team’s defense is still a force to be reckoned with.
