The Colorado Rapids pulled off a thrilling 3-2 victory against FC Dallas, thanks to a dramatic stoppage-time goal from 19-year-old Homegrown forward Darren Yapi. The win marked Colorado's second victory over Dallas this season and helped solidify their position in the Western Conference standings.
The match kicked off with high energy as both teams found the back of the net within the first 11 minutes. FC Dallas struck first when Logan Farrington capitalized on a rebound after Rapids goalkeeper Zack Steffen failed to secure the initial shot. However, Colorado responded quickly, with Rafael Navarro tapping in a close-range rebound just five minutes later to level the score at 1-1.
The first half concluded with both teams locked in a tense stalemate, setting the stage for a highly competitive second half. Despite a slow start to the latter 45 minutes, FC Dallas regained the lead in the 66th minute when Petar Musa headed in a cross from Sam Junqua, putting the home side ahead 2-1.
Refusing to back down, the Rapids continued to apply pressure and were rewarded with a penalty in the 76th minute after a foul on Djordje Mihailovic. Although Mihailovic's initial shot was saved, substitute Cole Bassett quickly recovered the ball and passed it to Navarro, who secured his second goal of the night, bringing the score to 2-2.
As the match entered stoppage time, Colorado showed no signs of settling for a draw. The team pushed forward relentlessly, and their efforts paid off in the 93rd minute when Mihailovic lofted a perfectly timed pass over the Dallas defense. Yapi, with composure beyond his years, chipped the ball over the onrushing goalkeeper to seal the victory.
This game-winning goal was Yapi's second of the regular season and third across all competitions, all of which have come in the dying moments of the match. Mihailovic’s assist, his 10th of the season, etched his name in the club's history books, making him only the second Rapids player to record at least 10 goals and 10 assists in a single season.
With this victory, the Rapids maintained their momentum following a successful Leagues Cup run and now look ahead to their upcoming home match against the Portland Timbers on September 14th. Colorado fans will be eagerly awaiting the return to DICK’S Sporting Goods Park as their team continues its push for a strong finish in the regular season.
