In a tightly contested match at Lower.com Field, the Columbus Crew played Charlotte FC to a 1-1 draw. The game, a rematch following the Crew's recent victory over LAFC in the 2023 MLS Cup, saw Columbus determined to improve upon their previous 2-0 defeat to Charlotte earlier this season.
Charlotte entered the match riding high from a significant 3-1 win over FC Cincinnati, bringing their energetic style of play to Columbus. Early on, they disrupted the Crew's rhythm, with their best chance coming in the 16th minute. Liel Abada sent a precise cross to Patrick Agyemang, whose headed effort missed the target.
Columbus gradually found their footing, despite Charlotte's aggressive midfield pressing, particularly against Sean Zawadzki. In the 21st minute, the Crew appeared to gain a crucial advantage when Adilson Malanda was penalized for a handball, awarding Columbus a penalty kick. However, after a VAR review, the decision was overturned.
Undeterred, the Crew took the lead in the 32nd minute. Cucho Hernandez capitalized on a defensive error by Charlotte, scoring his 13th goal of the season with a powerful strike. Despite Columbus's attempts to double their lead, the score remained 1-0 at halftime.
Goalkeeper Nicholas Hagen, making his first MLS start due to Patrick Schulte's absence for the 2024 Olympics, showcased his skills with a crucial save against Abada early in the second half. However, Charlotte equalized in the 62nd minute when Agyemang outmaneuvered Hagen and, after an initial block by Rudy Camacho, slotted the rebound home.
Both teams pushed for a winning goal, but neither could break the deadlock, resulting in a 1-1 draw. The match highlighted Cucho Hernandez's exceptional form, with the forward now boasting 13 goal contributions in the last six matches, including seven goals and six assists.
As the Crew prepare for their next challenge, they will face Atlanta United on the road. The match at Mercedes-Benz Stadium is set for 7:30 p.m. EDT and will be available on MLS Season Pass on Apple TV.
Cucho Hernandez continues to make history with the Columbus Crew, becoming the first player in club history to achieve 60 goal contributions in three years. His current form, with 13 goal contributions in six matches, underscores his critical role in the team's offense.
Nicholas Hagen, stepping in for Patrick Schulte, who is competing in the 2024 Olympics, made his first start of the MLS season. The Guatemalan international had previously played 55 minutes in a 0-0 draw against Real Salt Lake, and his performance against Charlotte showcased his readiness to step up when needed.
The Columbus Crew's next match sees them traveling to Atlanta to face Atlanta United. Fans can catch the action live from Mercedes-Benz Stadium at 7:30 p.m. EDT on MLS Season Pass on Apple TV.
