In a thrilling match at Lower.com Field in Columbus, Ohio, the Columbus Crew secured a resounding 4-1 victory against English Premier League side Aston Villa in tonight's Leagues Cup Showcase. The win bolstered the Black & Gold’s record against international clubs outside of league and tournament play to an impressive 14-6-3.
Forward Cucho Hernández was the standout performer of the night, recording a hat trick with goals in the 14th, 39th, and 45th minutes. His first goal came after wingback Will Sands switched the play to Christian Ramirez, who then found Hernández in the middle of the 18-yard box. Hernández's second goal was assisted by forward Diego Rossi, who played him through on goal, allowing Hernández to chip the Villa keeper and double the lead. The third goal saw midfielder Darlington Nagbe providing a perfect over-the-top ball to Hernández, who completed his hat trick with a left-footed shot.
Aston Villa managed to pull one back through Cameron Archer, but the Crew responded almost immediately, maintaining their dominance throughout the match.
Midfielder Dylan Chambost made his unofficial debut for the Crew, entering the match after halftime and scoring in the 52nd minute. Chambost capitalized on a rebound from Jacen Russell-Rowe’s shot, dispatching it into the back of the net to cap the match's scoring.
The Crew also saw Crew Academy midfielder Owen Presthus make his unofficial First Team debut in the 79th minute, marking a significant milestone for the young player.
The match drew an impressive crowd of 20,218 at Lower.com Field. The Black & Gold now look forward to their Round of 32 match in the Leagues Cup on Friday, August 9, where they will host the second-place finisher in Group West 4.
Cucho Isn't Slowing Down
Cucho Hernández's hat trick tonight continues his exceptional form, following his accolade as MLS Player of the Month for July. His performance against Aston Villa, though not counting towards MLS stats, showcased his scoring prowess and ability to perform against high-quality opponents.
Looking Ahead
Despite Aston Villa being in preseason mode, the Crew’s commanding performance should alleviate any concerns from their two-match slump before the Leagues Cup break. The team’s offensive strength and defensive solidity were evident against a formidable Premier League opponent.
The Columbus Crew’s next challenge in the Leagues Cup will be on August 9, when they face the winner of the West 4 division at home. Fans can catch the action on MLS Season Pass on Apple TV, with local radio broadcasts available in both English and Spanish.
Upcoming Match:
As the Crew continue their Leagues Cup journey, tonight’s victory sets a positive tone, demonstrating their capability to compete and excel against top-tier international competition.
