Aston Villa experienced a tough encounter against Champions League contenders RB Leipzig on Wednesday night at Red Bull Arena in New Jersey. The game marked the second match of Villa's USA Tour and saw the return of fan favorites John McGinn and Jacob Ramsey.
Under the guidance of manager Unai Emery, Villa started positively. However, their initial dominance was undone when Leipzig's Andre Silva netted the opening goal in the 17th minute. The Bundesliga team extended their lead just before halftime with a goal from Lois Openda, following a deflected cross by El-Chadaille Bitshiabu.
Villa's night took a further hit when Diego Carlos received a second yellow card after the second goal's aftermath, reducing the team to ten men. Despite the numerical disadvantage, Villa continued to fight, with Emery utilizing 22 players to gain valuable pre-season experience.
The match also saw the return of Jacob Ramsey, who played his first game since March, bringing a significant boost to the squad. Notably, Villa's starting lineup featured the debut of Amadou Onana, adding to the excitement for the claret-clad supporters.
After Robin Olsen's injury forced him off the field around the 30-minute mark, substitute goalkeeper Oliwier Zych faced a tough challenge. Leipzig maintained their pressure in the second half, nearly scoring again through Eljif Elmas.
Despite numerous substitutions and tactical adjustments, Villa couldn't close the gap. The team's focus now shifts to their upcoming game against Club América in Chicago, hoping to build on their performances and secure a pre-season victory.
