Utah State Aggies Continue Historic Streak with Gritty Win Over Fresno State

Utah State’s Unstoppable Momentum: A Historic Run

The Utah State Aggies are making history, and their recent performances show why they are among the nation's most formidable teams this season. Coming off one of the toughest three-game road stretches in program history, the Aggies returned home and rallied from a 17-point deficit to secure an 89-83 victory over Fresno State. This marks their fourth straight win, pushing their record to 14-1, the fifth-best start in program history.

Mastering the Road: Unprecedented Quad 1 Success

The Aggies’ road success has been nothing short of remarkable. Utah State emerged undefeated from a brutal stretch with victories over Saint Mary’s, No. 20 San Diego State, and Nevada — all Quad 1 wins. This streak made them the only team in the nation with three Quad 1 road victories, a feat unmatched since the adoption of the NET rankings in 2018. The Aggies’ overall record against Quad 1 and 2 opponents now stands at 6-1, tying them for the second-most such wins nationally, trailing only Memphis.

Fresno State Comeback: Depth Shines Through

Returning to Logan, the Aggies faced a determined Fresno State team. Despite falling behind 32-15 midway through the first half, Utah State clawed back with critical contributions from Karson Templin, Dexter Akanno, and Drake Allen. Templin led the team with a career-high-tying 18 points and 10 rebounds, while Akanno and Allen provided key momentum-shifting plays off the bench.

“We found a way to win,” said head coach Jerrod Calhoun. “But it certainly wasn’t our best outing.”

Akanno’s crucial three-pointer late in the first half sparked an 8-0 run that closed the gap to three at halftime. Allen’s relentless energy in transition and Akanno’s highlight-worthy dunk in the second half turned the tide, solidifying the Aggies’ control.

Falslev and Martinez: Steady Leaders Amid Challenges

While Mason Falslev and Ian Martinez, Utah State’s top scorers, posted solid numbers with 14 and 16 points respectively, their contributions were quieter than usual. Falslev, recently named Mountain West Player of the Week for the fourth time this season, struggled with his shooting but still played a pivotal role defensively and on the boards. Martinez, who has scored in double figures in every game this season, chipped in with timely baskets to maintain the Aggies’ momentum.

A Season to Remember

Utah State’s rise to No. 24 in the NET rankings underscores their dominance, as they remain the Mountain West’s highest-ranked team. With their sights set on even greater achievements, the Aggies will need to address slow starts, as acknowledged by Templin. “We have tough guys, but we have to be better in the first half,” he said.

As the Aggies continue their historic season, their depth, resilience, and ability to overcome adversity make them a team to watch. Whether it’s clawing back from a 17-point deficit or making history on the road, Utah State is proving they’re a force to be reckoned with.
