In a commanding performance, the No. 13/13 Ohio State Buckeyes showcased their prowess on the basketball court by defeating Belmont with a resounding 84-55 victory in the non-conference finale at the Value City Arena in Columbus, Ohio.
The Buckeyes wasted no time asserting their dominance, scoring the first six points of the game. The quarter ended with a flourish, as a buzzer-beating three-pointer from Rikki Harris extended the lead to 21-15. Jacy Sheldon, who tied her season-high with an outstanding 31 points, began her impressive performance by entering double figures in the second quarter.
Belmont fought back in the second quarter, briefly taking a 22-21 lead. However, Ohio State closed the first half with a 10-2 run, including another buzzer-beating three-pointer from Harris, securing a 38-28 lead heading into halftime.
The Buckeyes continued their dominance in the third quarter, outscoring Belmont 29-19. Ohio State's strong defense forced turnovers, allowing them to build a substantial lead of 67-47 by the end of the quarter.
The fourth quarter showcased Ohio State's defensive prowess, allowing only one field goal from Belmont. The game concluded with an 84-55 victory for the Buckeyes.
Jacy Sheldon's remarkable 31-point game, Celeste Taylor's 15 points, and Rikki Harris' 10 points contributed significantly to Ohio State's impressive win. Eboni Walker recorded a season-high eight points and seven rebounds, while Taylor Thierry showcased her skills with nine points and a game-high nine rebounds.
The Buckeyes' defense was a force to be reckoned with, forcing Belmont into 23 turnovers. Ohio State's defense notched 11 steals, and the team made a season-high 12 three-pointers. Sheldon's performance moved her up to ninth in program history for career steals.
Head Coach Kevin McGuff shared his surreal experience facing his daughter, Kilyn McGuff, who plays for Belmont. Despite the nerves, McGuff praised both teams and expressed pride in his daughter's accomplishments.
