In a thrilling face-off at the Schottenstein Center, the Ohio State men's basketball team emerged victorious against Penn State with a final score of 79-67. Despite a slow start, Penn State displayed resilience, narrowing a 23-point deficit to just nine in the second half. Penn State faced a challenging start, going 0-for-11 from the field as Ohio State capitalized on their opportunities, establishing a commanding 16-0 lead within the first six minutes. Jameel Brown's banked-in 3-pointer marked Penn State's first points, but the Buckeyes maintained control, taking a 33-19 lead into halftime.
The Buckeyes continued to dominate in the second half, using a 12-2 run to extend their lead to 53-31 with 12:23 remaining. At one point, Ohio State led by as much as 23 points (66-43) with 7:59 left on the clock.
Penn State showcased their resilience with a late-game surge, spearheaded by Nick Kern Jr., Puff Johnson, and Kanye Clary. A 20-6 run brought the Nittany Lions back within single digits at 72-63 with 2:17 to play. However, Ohio State closed out the game from the free-throw line, securing the 79-67 victory.
Senior Puff Johnson and sophomore Kanye Clary led Penn State with 13 points each, while Nick Kern Jr. contributed 12 points and Ace Baldwin Jr. added 10. Qudus Wahab grabbed a team-high 10 rebounds for the Nittany Lions.
For Ohio State, sophomore Evan Mahaffey, a Penn State transfer, had a standout performance, scoring a career-high 16 points and showcasing versatility with five rebounds, two steals, and two blocks. Roddy Gayle Jr. matched Mahaffey's 16 points and displayed excellent floor management with five assists.
Penn State will enjoy a bye week before returning to action on Saturday, Jan. 27, when they host Minnesota at 6:30 p.m. inside the Bryce Jordan Center. Ohio State, with a renewed momentum, hits the road for two consecutive games, starting with a Tuesday night contest at Nebraska.
