On Wednesday night, the University of Cincinnati men's basketball team displayed an impressive performance, securing a convincing 89-54 victory over Georgia Tech at Fifth Third Arena. The Bearcats, now boasting a 5-0 record, showcased their strengths, particularly in rim protection, with a notable contribution from 7-footer Aziz Bandaogo, who, recently eligible, nearly achieved a double-double with eight points and nine rebounds in just 21 minutes of play.
Bandaogo expressed his readiness and satisfaction in making a positive impact, emphasizing his consistent efforts in practice. UC coach Wes Miller praised both the team and Bandaogo for their handling of the game, acknowledging the significant support from fans. Viktor Lakhin led the scoring with 15 points, demonstrating accuracy from beyond the arc, while John Newman III and C.J. Fredrick contributed 12 and 11 points, respectively, with Fredrick's points coming in the second half.
The Bearcats showcased their three-point shooting prowess, with seven players making shots from beyond the arc. Overall, UC finished 14-for-35 in three-pointers and boasted a 47% field goal shooting, outclassing Georgia Tech, which managed only 35%. The Bearcats also dominated the boards, outrebounding the Yellowjackets 34-32.
Despite not starting, Bandaogo's impact was immediate, making a strong impression in the first half with five points, five rebounds, a block, and altering several shots. The game marked UC's largest margin of victory since the AAC tournament in March. Kowacie Reeves led Georgia Tech with 14 points.
The second half saw UC extending their lead, starting with a 7-0 run. Lakhin's exceptional three-point shooting, along with Fredrick's contributions, widened the gap. The lead peaked at 41 points before settling at 35 by the end of the game. Lakhin, Newman III, and Fredrick were the only players in double figures, but contributions from others, including Bandaogo, Lukošius, and Jizzle James, showcased the team's depth.
The crowd of 11,756 in attendance added to the electric atmosphere, celebrating UC's dominance. Despite the victory, Coach Miller expressed the team's continued focus on awaiting a decision regarding 6-11 transfer Jamille Reynolds, emphasizing the desire to further strengthen the team.
Looking ahead, UC remains undefeated in recent games against ACC opponents, with their next challenge scheduled against Howard University in Washington D.C. on November 28. The team, now 8-0 against ACC opponents, recognizes the importance of facing top-tier teams in preparation for the competitive Big 12 matchups.
