Should Jim Harbaugh decide to leave his post at Michigan amid the ongoing sign-stealing controversy that has cast a shadow over the Wolverines' otherwise stellar 2023 season, it seems unlikely that the NFL will readily embrace him without some form of consequences.
As per reports from Ian Rapoport and Tom Pelissero of NFL Network, the NFL is showing no signs of providing a sanctuary for Harbaugh and may even insist that he serves a suspension if the NCAA hands down such a punishment.
It is worth noting that the NFL does not have a specific rule mandating the enforcement of NCAA suspensions. Nevertheless, history does provide a precedent. Back in 2011, NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell suspended quarterback Terrelle Pryor for five games when Pryor entered the league via the supplemental draft after having been suspended by the NCAA for accepting impermissible benefits.
At that time, Goodell remarked,
"This smacks of a calculated effort to manipulate our eligibility rules."
With Harbaugh potentially eyeing an NFL return, it's probable that the NFL Players Association (NFLPA) will be closely monitoring the situation to ensure consistency in enforcing such standards.
Michigan currently finds itself under investigation for allegations of sign-stealing from opposing teams. Assistant coach Connor Stalions stands accused of orchestrating a network of individuals to attend games and record sideline activities, thereby allowing the Wolverines to gain insights into their rivals' signals. Stalions is presently on suspension with pay. Harbaugh, while disavowing any involvement in the alleged scheme, could face significant penalties. The NCAA may charge him with a lack of institutional control, particularly as the integrity of the games is being called into question, making it difficult to envision Harbaugh escaping without a substantial penalty.
Jim Harbaugh has previously interviewed for NFL head-coaching positions during the last two offseasons and may now be contemplating a return to the NFL instead of serving any imposed punishment. However, it is becoming increasingly evident that the NFL may be unwilling to facilitate his reentry.
Notably, Harbaugh enjoyed a successful four-season stint with the San Francisco 49ers, amassing a record of 44-19-1 during his tenure.
