Argentina clinched a narrow 1-0 victory over Ecuador in a pre-Copa América friendly match held in Chicago on Sunday, thanks to a well-timed goal from veteran winger Ángel Di María. The goal came five minutes before halftime, after a precise through ball from Cristian Romero found Di María, who calmly finished to give Argentina the lead.
This match marks one of Di María's last appearances for Argentina, as the Copa América will be his final tournament before retiring from international football. Despite dominating possession, Argentina couldn't extend their lead in the second half, even after Lionel Messi replaced Di María in the 56th minute.
"It was a deserved win," Di María said post-match.
"We have to keep working as we always do and stay united. Ecuador are a tough opponent, and today was a good test of what we can expect in the tournament."
Argentina's focus now shifts to their next friendly against Guatemala on Friday as they prepare to defend their Copa América title. They will face Canada in their opening match of the tournament on June 20, followed by games against Chile and Peru.
Ecuador, meanwhile, will continue their preparations with upcoming matches against Bolivia and Honduras. Their Copa América campaign begins on June 22 against Venezuela, followed by clashes with Jamaica and Mexico.
The 2024 Copa América will be held in the United States from June 20 to July 14, promising intense competition as teams from across the Americas vie for the prestigious title.
