Seattle Reign FC returned to Lumen Field with a resounding victory over San Diego Wave FC, demonstrating sheer determination after being reduced to 10 players early in the match. The Reign, hungry for a win after a dry spell, fought back from a goal down to secure three crucial points.
The game started with intense energy, but the tide turned against the Reign when forward Tziarra King received a red card just nine minutes in, following a video review that showed her hand making contact with Wave defender Hanna Lundkvist's face. The Wave capitalized quickly, scoring in the 11th minute after a set piece rattled the Reign's defense, with Kyra Carusa striking the crossbar and then finding the net.
Undeterred, the Reign adjusted their tactics and continued to press forward. Their resilience paid off in the 34th minute when Bethany Balcer capitalized on a defensive error, stealing the ball from Wave goalkeeper Kailen Sheridan and slotting it home to level the score.
The second half saw San Diego dominate possession and create multiple chances, but the Reign's defense, led by goalkeeper Laurel Ivory, held firm. Ivory made several crucial saves, including a remarkable stop in the 66th minute to deny Kaitlyn Torpey's powerful shot.
As the game approached its end, the Reign surged forward with renewed vigor. Substitute Veronica Latsko, who entered the match in the 52nd minute, sealed the victory in the 89th minute, heading in Ji So-Yun's precise cross.
Despite late pressure from San Diego, including a red card for defender Kristen McNabb, the Reign stood strong, securing a hard-fought 2-1 win.
Noteworthy performances included Balcer's goal-scoring prowess, defender Lauren Barnes's milestone 100th regular season win, and Latsko's decisive match-winning contribution.
The win extends Seattle Reign FC's dominance over San Diego Wave FC, maintaining their strong head-to-head record. Next up, the Reign face the Kansas City Current at Lumen Field on Wednesday, May 8, with tickets available for fans keen to witness more thrilling NWSL action.
