The newly rebranded Seattle Reign FC embarked on a fresh journey, bidding farewell to stalwarts like Megan Rapinoe, Rose Lavelle, and Emily Sonnett, who've left an enduring mark on both the team and the city. A crowd of 8,557 gathered at Lumen Field, eager for their first glimpse of the revamped Reign FC side.
Before the crowd could even settle into their seats, Bethany Balcer found herself poised at the penalty spot, mere seconds into the match, courtesy of a foul by Gabrielle Carle on Canadian international striker Huitema. Balcer calmly dispatched the penalty into the bottom left corner, sending the keeper the wrong way.
From the get-go, Reign FC dictated proceedings, with Ji and Fishlock orchestrating play in midfield, often dropping deep to facilitate their team's game. Shea Holmes stood out in defense throughout the match, occasionally driving forward to join in the attack. Despite Reign's chances to test Aubrey Kingsbury in the first half, with Balcer rattling the woodwork and Fishlock forcing a save, the Spirit's defense held firm.
In contrast, the Spirit struggled to create any meaningful opportunities throughout the game, particularly in the first half. However, a bright spot for them was the performance of first-rounddraft pick from Georgia, Croix Bethune. The rookie constantly challenged the Reign defense, displaying quickness and sharpness in possession, looking to create for herself and her teammates.
In the second half, Washington found some rhythm, exploiting spaces within the Reign FC backline. However, their hopes were dashed when a headed goal from Casey Krueger in the 69th minute was overturned by VAR after a review by Referee Natalie Simon.
A late red card to Aubrey Kingsbury sealed the Spirit's fate, as she handled the ball just outside her box to stop a counter-attack after Huitema was played through on goal. Reign FC held firm for the remainder of the game, securing their first three points of the 2024 NWSL season.
While the names on the jerseys and the crest may have changed, one thing remains constant: a resilient and determined Laura Harvey team. Reign FC will face the Chicago Red Stars in their next NWSL outing on March 23rd.
