Despite being able to hold the Current back for most of the match, Angel City gives up two goals late in the game allowing Kansas City to leave Los Angeles with a win.
The last regular season game between Kansas City and Angel City started slow for both teams with their defenses keeping the ball out of play. Scoring started 34 minutes into the game when Angel City’s Claire Emslie scored her fourth goal of the season, putting her in joint first for goals. Head Coach Becki Tweed talked about Emslie’s growth this season with her new found confidence and..
“...flare in the box.”.
Kansas City was able to equalize the match 20 minutes later when Vanessa DiBernardo sent a shot into the top left corner right over DiDi Haračić hands. With the score tied, both teams were getting more and more restless, trying their best to come out with a win.
It wasn’t until the 90th minute when Claire Lavogez scored the go ahead goal for the Current. Three minutes later, Lavogez scored again, putting the Current up 3-1 with three minutes left in extra time. Angel City Captain Ali Riley was disappointed with the brace scored late in the game by Kansas City,
“You have to be on your game for the entire 96 minutes. We let down at the end.”.
Regardless of the home loss there were positives for Angel City, who tried out a new formation against the high scoring Current. “We had a lot of possession at the time and we were winning the ball back after we lost it.”, Forward Alyssa Thompson shared after the game.
Both teams will be on the road for week 6. Angel CIty will be going up against Utah Royals FC. While Kansas City is looking to stay undefeated this season with a game against the Houston Dash.
