In a stunning display of dominance, the No. 1 South Dakota State Jackrabbits emerged victorious against the No. 3 North Dakota State Bison with a commanding 45-21 win, clinching their first-ever FCS title in a historic showdown held in Frisco, TX.
The game began with an intense first quarter that ended in a 7-7 tie. However, it was in the second quarter that South Dakota State unleashed an impressive 21-0 run, outscoring the Bison 24-7. This surge set the tone for the rest of the championship match, ultimately leading the Jackrabbits to a new record for FCS title games.
The Jackrabbits showcased a well-rounded offense, accumulating 283 rushing yards and three touchdowns on the ground, complemented by quarterback Mark Gronowski's stellar performance with three touchdown passes for 223 yards.
Coach John Stiegelmeier, awarded FCS Head Coach of the Year, celebrated his first title win in his remarkable 26th season as South Dakota State's head coach. Stiegelmeier's leadership not only secured the championship but also marked a series of significant milestones, including the team's first playoff win over North Dakota State and a four-game winning streak against the Bison, the longest since 1947-1950.
The game's turning point came when South Dakota State cornerback DyShawn Gales intercepted North Dakota State on fourth down with just five minutes remaining. This crucial play halted the Bison's drive and set the stage for a final push by the Jackrabbits.
Quarterback Mark Gronowski solidified his MVP-worthy performance by connecting with wide receiver Jaxon Janke for a 30-yard touchdown, extending the Jackrabbit lead. Additionally, linebacker Jason Freeman's interception further demonstrated South Dakota State's defensive prowess.
As the clock wound down, Gronowski's 51-yard touchdown run in the opening drive of the second half widened the point gap to an insurmountable 24 points. The halftime lead of 31-14 showcased the Jackrabbits' big plays and remarkable efficiency on third downs, maintaining control of the time of possession.
South Dakota State's dominance continued in the second half, with key plays including an 18-yard touchdown pass from Gronowski to Janke and a 30-yard field goal as the first half expired. Notably, a 55-yard run from running back Amar Johnson set up the field goal, showcasing the team's multifaceted offensive capabilities.
Despite North Dakota State's efforts, including a late second-quarter touchdown, turnovers and the relentless pressure from the Jackrabbits left the defending champions facing an uphill battle.
In the end, South Dakota State's historic victory not only secured their first FCS title but also solidified their place in college football history. Coach Stiegelmeier and his team can now celebrate a season marked by resilience, strategic prowess, and an indomitable spirit that led them to triumph on the national stage.
