Florida Atlantic University (FAU) showcased a dominant performance on Saturday, securing a commanding 56-14 victory over South Florida. The game marked a significant triumph for FAU, who now boasts a balanced record of 3-3 overall and an undefeated 2-0 in the American Athletic Conference (AAC).
Quarterback Daniel Richardson was instrumental in the Owls' success, completing an impressive 31 of 38 passes for a total of 382 yards and three touchdowns. His exceptional accuracy and strategic play were pivotal in FAU's offensive dominance. Wide receiver LaJohntay Wester also shone brightly, contributing 190 all-purpose yards and two touchdowns. Wester's remarkable versatility and speed were on full display, particularly in the second half.
The first half of the game ended with a narrow 21-14 lead for FAU, as South Florida managed a late touchdown following a 10-play, 76-yard drive just before halftime. However, the second half belonged entirely to the Owls. Wester's 17-yard touchdown catch extended the lead to 35-14, and he followed up with a spectacular 67-yard punt return touchdown, further cementing FAU's control.
Wester, who leads the AAC in both punt returns and receiving yards per game, finished the game with 10 receptions totaling 123 yards. His performance was complemented by Tony Johnson, who caught eight passes for a career-high 131 yards and a touchdown. Additionally, Zeke Moore contributed a short touchdown reception on FAU's first possession.
FAU's ground game was equally impressive, amassing 205 rushing yards. Michael Johnson led the charge with two rushing touchdowns, while Larry McCammon and Kobe Lewis each surpassed 70 yards on the ground, with both adding a touchdown to their stats.
South Florida's Nay’Quan Wright stood out for his team, rushing for 106 yards and a touchdown, but it wasn't enough to counter FAU's overwhelming offensive and defensive efforts.
Defensively, FAU has been a force to reckon with, holding four of its last five opponents to 20 points or less. The only exception was a game against Illinois, which scored 23 points.
The Owls' convincing victory over South Florida highlights their growing strength and coordination as they continue their AAC campaign. With Richardson's leadership and a solid supporting cast, FAU looks poised for further success in the season ahead.
