On Thursday evening, a near-record crowd of 35,314 fans packed the stands to support Rutgers football in their 12th bowl game appearance. The Scarlet Knights did not disappoint, leaving the game not only with a win but also with a historic moment that could reshape the future of Rutgers football. The Scarlet Knights (7-6) triumphed over the Miami Hurricanes (7-6) with a 31-24 victory, marking the first time in program history that Rutgers has defeated Miami.
"This win today is huge," said Kyle Monangai, the leading rusher in the Big Ten and Rutgers’ star running back. "Our goal at the beginning of the season wasn’t just to finish 7-6, but ending the season above .500 is a big step forward for this program. Winning the last game of the season gives us something positive to build on going into the offseason."
Monangai also noted the impact this victory could have on recruiting: "For high school guys, seeing us win and take steps in the right direction makes Rutgers a place they want to come and play. This win is a big deal for us."
This victory has the potential to reverse years of setbacks for the Scarlet Knights. Rutgers has struggled with a less-than-stellar reputation, making it difficult to attract top talent. However, the tide seems to be turning, as Rutgers continues to earn respect across the Big Ten conference by proving they are far more competitive than in the past.
Key Moments in the Game
Rutgers secured their victory over Miami with crucial plays across all facets of the game. Arguably, the most pivotal moment came midway through the third quarter when the Scarlet Knights blocked a Miami punt, allowing them to regain the lead. The Hurricanes attempted to punt from their own endzone, but defensive back Trevor Yeboah-Kodie blocked the kick, and defensive back Timmy Ward recovered the ball for a touchdown. This was Yeboah-Kodie’s third blocked punt of the season, and Ward’s second career recovery of a blocked punt for a touchdown.
This play gave Rutgers a 21-17 lead with five minutes left in the third quarter. Ward’s journey to this point, overcoming personal trials, was highlighted by Coach Greg Schiano in the postgame conference. "Timmy Ward is the embodiment of what this program is about," Schiano said. "He beat cancer, came to Rutgers, and started as an equipment manager. After trying out as a walk-on, he now leads our punt block team and made the key play in today’s win."
Another standout performance came from Monangai, who recorded 25 carries for 163 yards and a touchdown, earning the MVP trophy for the game. Rutgers quarterback Gavin Wimsatt contributed with two rushing touchdowns of his own from the one-yard line.

Rutgers Puts the Nation on Notice
Before the Pinstripe Bowl, Miami had not faced any Big Ten teams this season. The Hurricanes admitted that the style of play in the Big Ten was different from what they were used to in the ACC. The Big Ten is known for its physicality, with games often won or lost in the trenches. While both teams respected each other, Miami struggled with the physicality of Rutgers, which proved decisive in key moments of the game.
"This offense runs the ball hard, and I think that was the big difference," said Hurricanes linebacker Francisco Mauigoa. "They kept running the ball, and we just couldn’t figure it out in time. We started fighting back late, but it was too late. Credit to them for their physicality and dual-threat quarterback, which made a big difference."
As Rutgers continues to build on this victory, other teams will take notice. This win was not just another game—it was a statement that Rutgers is a team on the rise.
"... I’m looking forward to relaxing tonight, getting back to New Jersey tomorrow, and then getting back to work on recruiting and personnel," Schiano concluded. "It’s a lot more fun coming off a bowl championship."
