SMU Rolls Over Houston Christian in a 59-7 Victory
SMU's Mustangs asserted their dominance against Houston Christian University (HCU) with a commanding 59-7 win in Dallas. Brashard Smith led the offensive charge with 108 rushing yards and two touchdowns, while the Mustangs’ defense delivered a strong performance, highlighted by a 16-yard fumble return touchdown from 348-pound nose tackle Anthony Booker Jr.
The Mustangs, who have now won their ninth consecutive home game, showed explosive offensive power, scoring touchdowns on four consecutive possessions. The defense added to the momentum early in the first quarter when Jahfari Harvey’s hit forced a fumble that Booker returned for a score, giving SMU a 28-0 lead.
Quarterbacks Preston Stone and Kevin Jennings split playing time, contributing two passing touchdowns and one rushing score between them. SMU’s offensive depth was on full display, with 10 different players catching a pass and four rushing for more than 50 yards.
By halftime, SMU led 42-7, setting the stage for a smooth second half. Despite a brief lull, coach Rhett Lashlee commended his team for finishing strong, emphasizing the importance of maintaining focus throughout the game. SMU wrapped up the night with 595 total yards, including 369 rushing yards, their highest ground game output since 2019.
Houston Christian, in their season opener under new coach Jason Bachtel, struggled to keep pace, managing just 157 yards of offense and turning the ball over three times. Quarterback CJ Rogers had a rough outing, leaving the game after a hard hit that led to his lost fumble.
SMU will look to build on this momentum as they host BYU next Friday, continuing their series of home games
