Ohio State started their 2024 season on a strong note with a decisive 52-6 victory over Akron at Ohio Stadium. Although the game began with a slow start for the Buckeyes, they quickly found their rhythm, led by freshman wide receiver Jeremiah Smith, who made an impressive debut with two touchdowns.
The game didn’t start as planned for the Buckeyes, as their first drive resulted in a quick three-and-out, allowing Akron to score first with a 48-yard field goal by Garrison Smith, a former Ohio State walk-on. However, Ohio State responded on their next drive, marching 75 yards in 14 plays, culminating in a 16-yard touchdown pass from quarterback Will Howard to Smith, putting the Buckeyes ahead.
Akron's early momentum faded as the Buckeyes' defense tightened up, forcing multiple turnovers and keeping the Zips out of the end zone. Ohio State's offense, led by Howard, continued to find success, though they did encounter some resistance, including a turnover on downs in Akron's territory. However, they were able to extend their lead with a field goal and another touchdown pass to Smith, making it 17-3 at halftime.
The second half saw Ohio State fully assert their dominance. Running back Quinshon Judkins opened the half with a quick drive, capped off by a 2-yard touchdown run. Shortly after, the Buckeyes' defense added to the scoreboard when Lathan Ransom returned a fumble 26 yards for a touchdown. Akron managed to add another field goal, but it was all they could muster against a relentless Ohio State defense.
The Buckeyes continued to pile on the points with touchdowns from James Peoples and Carnell Tate, both making significant plays in the second half. The defense capped the game with an interception returned for a touchdown by Gabe Powers, securing the Buckeyes' 52-6 victory.
Howard had an impressive first start as Ohio State's quarterback, completing 17 of 28 passes for 228 yards and three touchdowns. Smith led the team with 92 receiving yards and two touchdowns, while TreVeyon Henderson added 65 rushing yards on eight carries. On defense, Ransom stood out with nine tackles and two tackles for loss, while JT Tuimoloau contributed 1.5 sacks.
This game set the tone for the Buckeyes, showcasing their depth and talent on both sides of the ball. With strong performances from key players, Ohio State demonstrated why they are a top contender this season.
Key stats from the game include Ohio State outgaining Akron 404 to 177 in total yards, with 234 of those coming through the air. The Buckeyes averaged 6.3 yards per play and converted 9 of 14 third-down attempts. Notably, they also forced three turnovers while committing none themselves.
The game was attended by 102,011 fans and included special moments such as a pregame tribute to the late Columbus Blue Jackets star Johnny Gaudreau and his brother Matthew, as well as the legendary Archie Griffin dotting the ‘i’ in Script Ohio during halftime.
Ohio State will look to build on this dominant performance as they continue their 2024 campaign.
