The Buckeyes put on another commanding display on Saturday, overwhelming Marshall 49-14 in a game that was effectively over by halftime. Ohio State’s first-half performance, which featured a 28-0 scoring run, showed why the team is ranked No. 3 in the nation. The combination of speed, power, and strategic play-calling left Marshall struggling to keep up, despite a spirited opening drive that briefly tied the game.
TreVeyon Henderson and Quinshon Judkins were the undeniable stars of the show, each finding the end zone twice on the ground. Judkins’ 86-yard touchdown run in the second quarter was particularly spectacular, highlighting his vision and burst that make him a threat on every carry. His 173-yard day on just 14 carries showcased the depth and versatility of Ohio State’s rushing attack. Henderson, while receiving fewer touches, made every one count, accumulating 76 yards and two touchdowns.
Quarterback Will Howard also had an outstanding game, demonstrating poise and precision. He completed 16 of 20 passes for 275 yards and two touchdowns, continuing to prove he can manage this high-powered offense effectively. His chemistry with standout wide receiver Emeka Egbuka was on full display, as Egbuka's five catches for 117 yards included a highlight-reel 68-yard touchdown where he made the Marshall secondary look like they were standing still. Freshman receiver Jeremiah Smith also made his mark with a 53-yard touchdown reception in the third quarter, showing Ohio State’s depth at the position.
Breaking Down the Game
While Marshall briefly gave the Buckeyes a scare by scoring the first touchdown against Ohio State this season, the Buckeyes’ response was swift and decisive. After allowing a 75-yard drive by Marshall capped off by a 1-yard touchdown run, Ohio State answered with a lightning-quick two-play drive that tied the game. Will Howard's 68-yard pass to Egbuka set the tone for what would become a long day for the Thundering Herd’s defense.
Ohio State’s defense also deserves plenty of praise. Led by safety Lathan Ransom, who racked up eight tackles, the unit consistently thwarted Marshall’s efforts to gain momentum. The defensive line applied pressure throughout the game, with Caden Curry’s sack in the second quarter being a key moment that stifled a Marshall drive deep in Ohio State territory. Even though Marshall’s quarterback Earle Stone had early success moving the ball, his opportunities dwindled as the game progressed, thanks to the relentless pressure and disciplined play by the Buckeyes.
Looking Ahead
If there's a critique to be made, it's that Ohio State still hasn’t faced a true test in terms of opposition. While Marshall showed some resilience, the gap in talent was evident after the first quarter. The Buckeyes’ first road game against Michigan State next week will be a much sterner challenge, especially given that Michigan State has a history of playing Ohio State tough, particularly in East Lansing. However, with the way Ohio State’s offense is firing on all cylinders, it’s hard to imagine many defenses being able to contain this squad.
What makes Ohio State’s performance even more impressive is their ability to dominate without overworking their star players. Judkins and Henderson combined for five touchdowns, and yet neither had an overwhelming number of carries, which speaks to the coaching staff's smart management. This also bodes well as the season progresses, with the Buckeyes able to keep their key players fresh for tougher matchups ahead.
Final Thoughts
Saturday’s game was a strong statement from Ohio State, reminding everyone why they’re considered a top contender for the College Football Playoff. The offense looks balanced, with a potent rushing attack complementing Howard’s efficiency through the air. Defensively, they remain stout, limiting explosive plays and forcing mistakes when needed.
If Ohio State can continue this level of performance, especially on the road against teams like Michigan State, they’ll solidify themselves as one of the most complete teams in the nation. For now, the Buckeyes have plenty to celebrate as they roll into what will likely be a more challenging stretch of their schedule. Michigan State will be a crucial game to watch, and it could serve as an important indicator of whether Ohio State is ready to compete for a national championship.
