As Ohio State gears up for its season opener against the Akron Zips, head coach Ryan Day has officially named true freshman Jeremiah Smith as one of the starting wide receivers. Smith, the top recruit in the Class of 2024, has generated significant buzz, especially given his exceptional combination of size, speed, and reliable hands. According to 247Sports’ Andrew Ivins, Smith is "one of the top prospects to come out of South Florida in the modern recruiting era" and poses a serious threat to opposing defenses.
While Ohio State is known for its ability to produce NFL-caliber receivers, including recent first-round picks like Marvin Harrison Jr. and Jaxon Smith-Njigba, the pressure is on Smith to continue that legacy. The Buckeyes' receiving corps is traditionally deep and talented, with returning senior Emeka Egbuka expected to lead the group after an impressive 2022 season where he recorded 66 catches for 1,039 yards and nine touchdowns. However, Egbuka’s missed time due to an ankle injury last season means that other receivers, including fellow freshmen Carnell Tate and Brandon Inniss, will also see significant playing time.
Smith’s inclusion as a starter is a testament to his skill and potential, particularly at a program renowned for developing top-tier receivers. Despite the high expectations, Smith remains focused on his role within the team. He recently addressed the media, acknowledging the pressure but emphasizing that his primary concern is helping the team win rather than meeting external expectations.
Ohio State’s history of producing NFL talent at the wide receiver position is well-documented. Over the past several years, the program has consistently churned out top-tier talent, including Marvin Harrison Jr., Garrett Wilson, Chris Olave, and Michael Thomas, among others. Smith’s ability to follow in their footsteps will be a storyline to watch as the season unfolds.
For now, however, Smith is concentrating on his debut and contributing to the Buckeyes’ success in their first game. "I just want to go out there and win the game," Smith said, underscoring his team-first mentality as he prepares for what could be a breakout season.
