Billy Edwards Jr. Steals the Spotlight as Maryland's New Quarterback
Billy Edwards Jr. confidently stepped onto the field for Maryland on Saturday morning, hours before the kickoff against Connecticut at SECU Stadium. His demeanor—relaxed and energized—signaled the conclusion of a quarterback competition that had stretched from spring through training camp, ultimately naming him as the starter. Edwards’ seamless performance in leading the Terrapins to a 50-7 victory further validated Coach Michael Locksley’s decision to choose him to replace the record-setting Taulia Tagovailoa.
From the first snap, Edwards commanded the offense with precision, completing a backward pass to wide receiver Tai Felton, who made a significant 19-yard gain. The drive ended with an 18-yard touchdown, setting the tone for what would be a dominant performance by the Terps. Edwards delivered a career-high 350 yards of total offense, completing 20 of 27 passes for 311 yards and two touchdowns, while also contributing 39 yards on the ground.
Maryland’s offense was firing on all cylinders, amassing 629 yards, with 248 coming from the ground game. Notably, redshirt freshman Nolan Ray scored on a 48-yard touchdown run in the first quarter, helping Maryland build a 14-0 lead early. The Terrapins’ dominance continued as they extended their nonconference opener winning streak to 13, with Edwards’ accuracy and decision-making being central to their success.
Defensively, Maryland stifled Connecticut, holding them scoreless until the waning moments of the third quarter. The Terps' defense was relentless, with senior linebacker Ruben Hyppolite II and cornerback Glendon Miller each recording an interception. This defensive prowess, combined with the explosive offense, ensured that the game was never in doubt.
As the game progressed, Maryland’s 131 rushing yards in the first quarter alone underscored their control, contributing to a commanding 23-0 halftime lead. Felton was a standout, catching seven passes for a career-high 178 yards and two touchdowns, including a 75-yard score that put the game well out of reach.
Edwards, who transferred from Wake Forest, reflected on his preparation and mindset, emphasizing the importance of staying calm and trusting his training. His leadership and familiarity with the system were evident throughout the game, as he made the most of his opportunity to lead the Terrapins.
The victory marked the beginning of a new era for Maryland football, with Edwards proving he is more than capable of filling the shoes of his predecessor. As the season progresses, the Terps will look to build on this strong start, with Edwards at the helm.
