In a game that was more about strategic decisions than the final score, Team USA secured a commanding 103-86 win over South Sudan at the Olympics on Wednesday evening. The absence of Joel Embiid, the 2022-23 NBA MVP and usual starting center, was notable as Coach Steve Kerr opted for a different approach to the game.
Jayson Tatum, a consistent first-team All-NBA performer, who had been left out of the rotation in the previous game against Serbia, started this game but took the place of his Boston Celtics teammate, Jrue Holiday. Anthony Davis stepped in for Embiid at center, contributing to a lineup that also saw Bam Adebayo and Derrick White forming a strong second unit. Adebayo led the U.S. with 18 points and seven rebounds, effectively exploiting South Sudan's undersized frontcourt.
LeBron James added 12 points, seven rebounds, and five assists, marking another milestone by joining Kevin Durant and Carmelo Anthony as the only U.S. players to score 300 points in their national team careers. South Sudan's standout performer, Nuni Omot, led his team with 24 points, but it wasn't enough to overcome the Americans' robust defense and aggressive play.
The lineup adjustments seemed strategic, particularly given South Sudan's reliance on speed, which had troubled Team USA in a close exhibition game earlier this month. By resting Embiid, Kerr could better match his team against South Sudan's strengths. Despite some struggles in the third quarter, where a scoring drought allowed South Sudan to narrow the gap, the U.S. maintained a comfortable lead.
Kerr's decision to rotate his bench earlier in the third quarter paid off, allowing the team to regain control. Durant's continued strong performance off the bench, contributing 14 points, and Derrick White adding 10 points, highlighted the depth of the American squad.
Tyrese Haliburton also made his first appearance since the previous matchup against South Sudan, adding six points. Embiid, who has faced challenges this summer, including scoring just four points in a previous game against Serbia and dealing with boos from the crowd, responded positively this time, with support from his teammates.
With the win, Team USA advanced to the Olympic quarterfinals, set to play against winless Puerto Rico on Saturday. The outcome of the Serbia versus South Sudan game on the same day will determine which team joins the Americans in the next round from Pool C. In other pools, Canada, France, and Germany have already secured their spots and are expected to be significant competitors moving forward.
As the tournament progresses, the strategic decisions by Kerr and the adaptability of Team USA's lineup will be crucial in their quest for Olympic gold.
