In a much-anticipated MLS fixture, the Columbus Crew ended their latest match with a scoreless draw against CF Montreal. The clash gained extra attention due to Laurent Courtois' return to Columbus, now leading Montreal after two impressive seasons with Crew 2. The game's initial half presented a tactical probing from both sides, resulting in few real threats on goal. However, the second half saw the Crew amplify their attacking efforts, although they failed to capitalize on the numerous chances created.
"Today's match showcased a chess match of tactics, particularly in how each team approached their game plan," said an analyst post-match. The first half was notably lackluster, with both teams playing conservatively. Montreal, under Courtois, allowed the Crew to dominate possession while focusing on fortifying their defensive line, effectively neutralizing the home team's offensive forays.
Montreal's approach mirrored but also adapted elements of Columbus' strategy. While they incorporated aspects of Nancy’s style, tweaks by Courtois were evident, especially in their counterattacking attempts through striker Mason Toye. Despite Columbus' increased possession and forward momentum, Montreal's strategy to exploit this by quick turnovers showcased their tactical acumen.
The similarities between Courtois and Nancy’s strategies were evident, suggesting that with the right development, Montreal could become a significant force in the Eastern Conference. However, for now, securing a draw against the champions remains a commendable outcome as they look forward to their next fixtures.
The game's tempo changed notably in the second half as the Black & Gold abandoned their passive play for a more direct attack.
"We've seen this passive approach during the Porter years, but Nancy’s vibrant and bold soccer style is what the fans expect now," remarked a sports journalist.
The Crew restructured their formation, notably pushing wingback Max Arfsten into midfield roles and allowing more players to engage upfront. Aidan Morris’s strategic positioning on the right and the offensive inclinations of Sean Zawadzki and Malte Amundsen further intensified the Crew’s attack, creating numerous scoring opportunities.
Despite generating a high expected goals (xG) and creating multiple chances through late substitutions, the Crew could not secure a goal.
"It's rare to see a Nancy-led team not score, but we take the point and focus on the upcoming CONCACAF Champions Cup match against Monterrey," commented Crew coach Wilfried Nancy.
As the Crew prepares for their critical match against Monterrey, the tactical nuances from this game will likely influence their approach, aiming for a spot in the CONCACAF Champions Cup final.
