The St. Louis Battlehawks, currently leading the XFL conference with a three-game winning streak, faced off against the DC Defenders, who had maintained an unbeaten record at Audi Field since the XFL 2020. Under the guidance of Head Coach Anthony Becht, the Battlehawks came into the game strong, following a substantial 32-17 win against the Showboats.
The last meeting between these two teams at Audi Field saw tensions rise, culminating in a brawl that led to several suspensions, with the Defenders narrowly clinching a 34-28 victory.
First Quarter Highlights:
The game commenced with St. Louis' Blake Jackson making a significant return to DC’s 25-yard line. However, the Defenders' Malik Fisher quickly shifted momentum with a critical strip sack and recovery on Battlehawks' quarterback AJ McCarron. Despite this early advantage, DC's offense faltered when Jordan Ta’amu's pass was intercepted by Brandon Sebastian. McCarron then redeemed himself by leading a successful drive, capped with a 13-yard touchdown pass to Hakeem Butler.
Second Quarter Developments:
The quarter began with Battlehawks' kicker Andre Szmyt extending their lead, while the Defenders narrowed the gap with Cam’Ron Harris scoring a one-yard touchdown. Kelvin Harmon, continuing his strong performance, caught a 15-yard touchdown pass, bringing the score to 17-12 by halftime.
Third Quarter Play:
The quarter was marked by stalled drives from both teams. Malik Fisher, maintaining his standout season, added another sack to his record. Szmyt, with his consistent performance, scored from 39-yards, maintaining a flawless game.
Fourth Quarter Drama:
The final quarter began dramatically as Battlehawks' DE Pita Taumoepenu stripped the ball from Ta’amu, with St. Louis regaining possession. Despite a battered offensive line, St. Louis expanded their lead with an 80-yard touchdown by Butler. The Defenders struggled, and St. Louis exploited this, culminating in a blocked punt and subsequent touchdowns, sealing the game at 45-12.
Conclusion:
The Defenders faced a tough day, with quarterback Jordan Ta’amu throwing for 101 yards and three interceptions. St. Louis not only ended the Defenders' winning streak but also established themselves as formidable contenders, setting the stage for their next game against the Houston Roughnecks in St. Louis.
This commanding victory not only breaks the Defenders' streak but also signals the Battlehawks' rising dominance in the UFL landscape, making them a team to watch this season.
