Philadelphia Union II demonstrated remarkable tenacity on Sunday afternoon, rallying in the second half to sustain their unbeaten run and clinching a dramatic shootout victory against their arch-rivals, New York Red Bulls II.
The match, filled with competitive spirit, ended 1-1 in regulation time. Union II’s striker, Eddy Davis III, was pivotal, netting a crucial equalizer in the 56th minute, setting the stage for a penalty shootout finale. Goalkeeper Andrew Rick was instrumental during the shootout, blocking two shots, which propelled Union II to the top of the Eastern Conference standings.
The rivalry between the Red Bulls and Union was evident from the start, with both teams fiercely contending to impose their game style. The visitors initially dominated, creating a significant early chance in the fourth minute when Frank Ssebufu’s cross nearly resulted in a goal by Curtis Ofori. Despite further attempts by Ofori, including a near miss after shrugging off defenders, he was thwarted by a well-timed tackle from Union’s center-back Olwethu Makhanya.
Red Bulls II broke the deadlock in the 14th minute when Frank Sserwadda capitalized on a counterattack following a Union II free kick, cleverly slipping the ball under goalkeeper Rick. Despite this setback, Union II remained focused, creating multiple opportunities. Markus Anderson nearly equalized with a fierce shot that just cleared the crossbar.
Continuing their aggressive play into the second half, Union II finally equalized through an intricate play. The move started with a swift change of play to Frankie Westfield, who sent a sharp pass into the box for Davis III to skillfully redirect into the net. Union II maintained pressure and nearly took the lead shortly after equalizing, when Sanders Ngabo launched a counterattack, setting up a scoring chance that was ultimately saved.
Head Coach Marlon LeBlanc made strategic substitutions just after the hour mark, introducing Sal Olivas, Gavin Wetzel, and Cavin Sullivan, who added vigor to the tense match, which saw seven yellow cards issued.
The match concluded in a shootout after a tense standoff, with both teams initially scoring their first penalties. However, goalkeeper Rick’s diving save gave Union II the advantage. Kyle Tucker and CJ Olney then successfully converted their shots, while the final attempt from Red Bulls II hit the post, sparking jubilation at Subaru Park.
Looking ahead, Union II prepares to continue their campaign on the road against FC Cincinnati 2 next Sunday, aiming to maintain their strong form with the kickoff at 4 PM.
