Philadelphia Union maintained their flawless start to the 2024 campaign, securing a victory in a penalty shootout against Orlando City B on Thursday night at Subaru Park.
The match's first goal was netted by Sal Olivas, who converted a cross from Frankie Westfield in the 11th minute. Orlando City B managed to level the score at the half-hour mark, and the contest remained tied at the conclusion of regular time. During the penalty shootout, both teams scored consistently until the 14th round, when goalkeeper Andrew Rick made a critical save, clinching a second league point for Union II. The team, guided by Marlon LeBlanc, demonstrated a lively and offensive approach, bolstered by an early season rest and the inclusion of four first-team players—Jamir Berdecio, Olwethu Makhanya, Sanders Ngabo, and Nick Pariano—alongside Union Academy players.
Andrew Rick had a busy start, saving three attempts within the first nine minutes, including a crucial block from a close-range shot by Alexander Freeman and subsequent opportunities. Frankie Westfield played a key defensive role, preventing an early goal on a corner kick. The rebound attempt by Jhon Solis was also thwarted by Rick’s quick reaction.
This defensive resilience fueled the Boys in Blue, culminating in a beautifully executed goal from a combination between Westfield and Olivas. The game intensified, with both teams fiercely competing, until Orlando City B equalized through a link-up between Yutaro Tsukada and Wilfredo Rivera.
After halftime, Philadelphia continued to press, with Nick Pariano making a notable attempt blocked after a dynamic break. Substitutes Carlos Rojas and Giovanny Sequera came on, sparking changes that nearly led to a go-ahead goal. Academy player Ryan Zellefrow almost scored, sending a cross that deflected off the crossbar.
The match approached its climax as David Vazquez pushed forward, nearly scoring in the final moments of added time. The shot, however, was deflected wide by the Orlando goalkeeper.
The penalty shootout was a nail-biter, with Union II nailing all their attempts. Rick's decisive save ultimately secured the victory.
Looking ahead, Union II has little time to rest as they prepare to face Atlanta United 2 on the road this Monday, April 15th. The game is scheduled for 7:30 PM ET at Fifth Third Bank Stadium and will be streamed live on MLSNEXTPro.com.
