In a thrilling quarterfinal matchup that basketball fans will remember for years to come, the Wright State Raiders men’s basketball team's season concluded with a dramatic overtime loss to Northern Kentucky, ending with a score of 99-97. Despite the heartbreaking finish, the game showcased the undeniable talent and relentless effort of both teams, making it a classic encounter in the annals of the Horizon League Championship.
The Wright State Raiders, led by a spirited performance from Tanner Holden who scored 24 points, initially dominated the game, surging to a 17-2 lead early in the first half. Alex Huibregtse and Trey Calvin, not to be outdone, each added a significant 20 points, demonstrating the depth and versatility of the Raiders' offense. A.J. Braun and Brandon Noel also contributed significantly, scoring 18 and 10 points, respectively, rounding out a well-balanced attack from Wright State.
On the other side, Northern Kentucky's resilience was personified by Marques Warrick, who led all scorers with 35 points, a testament to his skill and determination. The Norse's tenacity was on full display as they erased a nine-point deficit in the second half, tying the game and eventually forcing it into overtime in a breathtaking fashion. The climax of the game came in overtime, where Northern Kentucky edged ahead, despite a last-second effort from Wright State that nearly changed the outcome.
Wright State's season may have ended, but the legacy of its players, particularly Trey Calvin and Tanner Holden, will endure. Calvin and Holden finish their collegiate careers ranked as the No. 2 and No. 3 scorers in program history, a monumental achievement that speaks volumes about their contributions to the Raiders.
While the men's team faced elimination, the Wright State women's team continued their journey in the Horizon League Championship, securing a spot in the semifinals with a victory over Milwaukee. Their next challenge is set for Monday afternoon at the Indiana Farmers Coliseum in Indianapolis, where they aim to extend their successful season further into the championship.
