MINNEAPOLIS — Mike Mitchell Jr. delivered an electric performance, scoring all 22 of his points in a flawless first half to lead the Minnesota Golden Gophers (8-5) to a 90-68 win over Morgan State (6-10) on Sunday. Mitchell’s perfect shooting, including a remarkable 6-for-6 from beyond the arc, set the tone for a much-needed offensive breakout.
The Gophers found their rhythm early, responding to seven lead changes with a decisive 10-2 run that established a 22-13 advantage. Minnesota’s offense was firing on all cylinders in the first half, shooting 59% from the field and amassing 55 points to take a commanding 55-37 halftime lead.
While Minnesota cooled slightly in the second half, shooting 43% and scoring 35 points, their defense kept Morgan State at bay. The Bears never came closer than 15 points, and the Gophers extended their lead to as much as 27 late in the game, capped by a Caleb Williams three-pointer.
Key Performances:
Morgan State’s Kameron Hobbs led all scorers with 25 points, but the Bears struggled to keep up with Minnesota’s efficient ball movement and scoring.
Improved Ball Movement:Minnesota’s 20 assists on 31 made field goals reflected a more cohesive offensive strategy. Lu’Cye Patterson led the way with six assists, facilitating high-percentage shots and helping the Gophers avoid the stagnant play that has plagued them in earlier losses.
Defensive Concerns Persist: Despite holding Morgan State to 40% shooting, the Gophers’ defensive intensity waned at times. Lapses in effort led to 12 offensive rebounds for the Bears, though Minnesota limited them to just four second-chance points. The defense will need to tighten up as the Gophers prepare for tougher Big Ten opponents.
Lingering Struggles: While Minnesota’s win showcased their potential, challenges remain. Patterson, Rigsby, and Odukale all struggled offensively, highlighting inconsistent guard play as an area of concern. The absence of Tyler Cochran also continues to limit the team’s rotation options.
Looking Ahead: The Gophers closed out non-conference play with an 8-3 record, but questions linger about how their improved shooting and ball movement will translate to Big Ten competition. Mike Mitchell Jr.’s return to full health has been a game-changer, but the team’s overall consistency will be tested against ranked opponents like No. 21 Purdue on Thursday.
As Minnesota shifts focus to conference play, their performance against Morgan State provides both optimism and clear areas for improvement. With Mitchell leading the charge, the Gophers have the potential to surprise, but they’ll need to bring consistent energy and execution to compete at the next level.
