Lionel Messi turned a regular MLS match into an unforgettable event in New England this past Saturday, delivering a masterclass performance that attracted more spectators than any New England Patriots game last season. The legendary forward scored twice, securing the top spot in MLS scoring charts, and contributed an assist in Inter Miami’s 4-1 triumph against the New England Revolution.
Messi’s magnetic presence helped set a new attendance record for the Revolution with 65,612 fans gathering at Gillette Stadium, marking it as the second-highest attended soccer game at the venue, owned by Robert Kraft. As the match approached its conclusion, Messi acknowledged the crowd’s roaring appreciation during a stoppage before the final whistle.
New England’s coach, Caleb Porter, expressed his admiration and slight frustration post-match, stating,
“That’s Messi for you. He manages to conjure goals seemingly out of thin air, even when you think you’ve contained him.”
Despite an early goal by New England’s Tomás Chancalay, Messi’s prowess shone through, beginning with his equalizer in the 32nd minute from close range.
Later, connecting with a pass from Sergio Busquets in the 68th minute, Messi pushed Inter Miami ahead. His second goal of the night brought his season tally to nine, nudging ahead of Chicho Arango of Real Salt Lake. Not stopping there, Messi nearly completed a hat-trick in the 83rd minute, only for his attempt to be deflected. However, teammate Benjamin Cremaschi was on hand to score, marking his first of the season after returning from surgery.
Culminating his night, Messi assisted close friend Luis Suárez in the 88th minute, which not only extended their lead but also marked an MLS milestone: Messi became the first player to score and assist in five consecutive matches.
Reflecting on the atmosphere and Messi’s impact, Inter Miami coach Tata Martino remarked,
“People come to see Leo, that’s undeniable. Yet, they also hope for a victory for their team. The atmosphere really drives us.”
This match at Gillette Stadium will be remembered as one of the greats, second only to an international friendly in 2007 between Brazil and Mexico, which holds the record with 67,584 fans in attendance.
